Species' Fall

Stories from the realm of more-than-human nature

Becoming Mycelium

Fluctuating spores and human limbs (っ◔◡◔)っ

On the 19th of November, we facilitated a Becoming Mycelium dance workshop at Kulturhuset Islands Brygge. It was so much fun! Through movement and dance, we explored the life cycle of a mushroom-forming fungus. We stretched our threads long and expanded the mycelium, connecting, finding our groove, dancing in a fairy ring, and sweating to make our beautiful mushrooms burst through the soil. In the end, we decomposed ourselves and relaxed back into the network holding and nourishing us all.

There was a great variety of ages represented, with the youngest participant being 6 years old. The feedback was very positive, so we hope to repeat the format again and keep developing it. Ida, our mushroom representative of the group, facilitated the workshop with help from Rik. Ida’s thesis, "How like a Mushroom - an experiment in how to make kin with fungi" (2020), can be downloaded here. The workshop was inspired by the improvisational dance Gaga, as facilitated by instructor Kari Vig Petersen.

We are thrilled to keep collaborating with Kulturhuset Islands Brygge, and recommend checking out their future events. We have two workshops coming up in the spring, Becoming Lichen and Becoming Hare. Stay tuned for more info: https://linktr.ee/becomingspecies.

Becoming Species has entered winter hibernation mode, but do feel free to reach out if you get species curious.
